ShowIt for macOS

Record one part of the screen, neatly, for presentations and tutorials.

ShowIt is a free Mac app for you if you record your screen often. Draw a zone on the screen, for example 1920×1080, and any window you drop there fits right inside it. Set up scenes with a framed camera and a microphone with a locked volume, then record just that zone with one key.

Why we built ShowIt

We record a lot of tutorials and presentations for RWID classes. Our screens are big, while a video that is pleasant to watch is 1920×1080. Recording the whole screen gives a video with tiny text, full of windows that have nothing to do with it.

Recording part of the screen is a hassle too. Windows have to be sized to fit the recording area, and the maximize button always makes them fill the whole screen. The camera needs a tidy frame, the mic volume changes by itself after an online meeting, and once the recording app crashes, half an hour of recording is lost with it.

We tried what already existed. The built-in macOS recorder has no notion of a fixed work area. OBS is complete, but it takes a lot of setup for one simple presentation. So we built the tool we needed ourselves: one 1920×1080 work area on the screen, and one key to record it.

How ShowIt solves it

Every feature came from a real problem we hit while recording class material on a Mac.

Zones: a fixed work area

Draw any zone with rulers, for example 1920×1080 in the top-left corner. A window dropped in a zone fills it right away, and the maximize button only enlarges the window up to the zone's edge. Zone layouts can be saved and loaded again for each kind of work.

Scenes like in OBS

A scene combines a zone, microphone, camera with a frame, automatic zoom towards mouse movement, a frame rate of 30 or 60 fps, and the file format. Make scenes for presentations, tutorials or demos, then pick the one to use from the menu.

Your camera in a professional frame

The camera appears in a corner of the video in the frame you choose. Move and resize it right in the preview. Your own frame just needs to be a transparent image: the transparent part in the middle is where the camera goes, in any shape.

Crash-safe recording

Video is written as fragmented MP4 or MOV every two seconds. If the app or the Mac stops suddenly, the recording up to the last second can still be played. Recordings can be paused, resumed or discarded.

Get started in three steps

  1. 1

    Install with one command

Open Terminal, paste the command below, then press Enter. ShowIt is installed in Applications and its icon appears in the menu bar.

  2. 2

    Grant permissions

Accessibility to arrange windows in zones, Screen Recording to record the zone, then Microphone and Camera when you first record.

  3. 3

    Record your first scene

A 1920×1080 zone is ready in the top-left corner. Drop your presentation window there, then press ⌃⌥R to start and stop.

Paste into Terminal (Apple silicon Mac, macOS 15 or later):

curl -fsSL https://remoteworker.id/install/showit | sh

Recordings stay on your Mac

Zones, scenes, frames and recordings are stored on your own Mac. No account needed and nothing is uploaded. ShowIt's own windows and zone lines are never recorded.

Shortcuts for everything

⌃⌥R starts and stops recording, ⌃⌥P pauses, ⌃⌥G draws a zone, ⌃⌥E opens the scene editor, and ⌃⌥↩ fills the zone with the active window.

Questions about ShowIt

Is ShowIt free?

Yes. ShowIt is free to download and use, with no account and no watermark.

What format does it produce?

1920×1080 H.264 video at 30 or 60 fps with AAC audio, as fragmented MP4 or MOV. Recordings are saved in the Movies/ShowIt folder.

How do I make my own camera frame?

Save a PNG, WebP, TIFF or HEIC image with a transparent background, 300 to 4096 px per side. The transparent part in the middle becomes the camera area. Make it about twice the size of the camera in the video so it stays sharp, for example 1200×1000 px for a 520×390 camera.

Does macOS show a warning when ShowIt opens?

No, if you install it with the command above. ShowIt is not yet notarized by Apple, but files downloaded through Terminal are not given a quarantine flag, so macOS opens it straight away.

Which Mac do I need?

A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

How do I update it?

Run the install command again. Your zones, scenes, frames and recordings stay where they are.

Record your next lesson, neatly.

Free. Install with one command, drop a window in the zone, and press ⌃⌥R.
